AfD Leader Calls for Mass Deportations Amid Nationwide Elections

The co-leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, has called for mass deportations of immigrants in a speech to supporters at a rally in Riesa, Saxony. The proposal, known as “remigration,” aims to forcibly remove immigrants who break the law or refuse to integrate into German society.

Weidel’s statement was met with applause from party delegates and echoes her party’s position on normalization of relations with Moscow and opposition to wind turbine projects. However, critics argue that remigration is akin to ethnic cleansing. Weidel has positioned herself as a more moderate face of the party, but some see her stance as a nod to radical right leader Björn Höcke.

The AfD’s proposal comes ahead of next month’s nationwide elections, during which the party is expected to perform well despite being ruled out by other major parties for coalition membership. Protests against the rally drew tens of thousands, with police enforcing lockdowns in Riesa.
