Prospect Medical Holdings Files for Bankruptcy Amid Hospital Operations

Prospect Medical Holdings, the parent company of Our Lady of Fatima Hospital and Roger Williams Medical Center, has filed for bankruptcy in a Dallas federal court. Despite this, both hospitals will remain open, and patient care will continue uninterrupted.

According to CharterCARE, which operates the two hospitals directly, there is no immediate impact on their operations. The company stated that their hospitals are fully operational, busy, and actively treating patients. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha also confirmed that his office will not be affected by the filing and will work to ensure that the hospitals continue to provide high-quality care.

However, Rhode Island officials have expressed concerns about the potential impact of bankruptcy on the state’s healthcare system. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse warned that private equity firms can lead to bad outcomes for patients and providers, highlighting the need for priorities to be placed on patient care and workers over greedy investors.

The Attorney General has reassured Rhode Islanders that his office is prepared for all scenarios and will work to facilitate a responsible transfer of ownership for the hospitals. The filing is seen as a developing story, and officials are urging caution while exploring options for the future of the hospitals.
