Legendary author Stephen King and director Mike Flanagan recently walked the red carpet for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) premiere of their new film, The Life of Chuck. In an exclusive interview, we caught up with them to discuss their latest project and the status of their upcoming series adaptation of The Dark Tower.
When asked about the long-delayed series, King had a quick response: “The Dark Tower.” He then added, “I’m trying to rev myself up,” hinting that there might be some news on the horizon. Flanagan was equally coy, saying, “Who knows? I think with The Dark Tower, for anybody who is familiar with it, when you’re on the path of the beam it’s an incredibly long journey. But that doesn’t mean we’re not going forward with it. It just means it takes time.”
Given their successful collaboration on Gerald’s Game, a novella once deemed impossible to translate to the screen, we asked King what makes Flanagan uniquely adept at bringing his stories to life. King praised Flanagan’s ability to develop the story without “fixing” it, saying, “He’s able to take the story flat and develop it in a way that doesn’t fix it.” He also commended Flanagan’s discipline and attention to detail, stating, “He’s great at what he does; he’s really creative.”
While we won’t be getting any more information from King and Flanagan on their upcoming projects just yet, fans of The Dark Tower can take comfort in the fact that both creators seem committed to bringing this epic series to life.
