IATSE Strikes Atlantic Theater Company Over Unequal Working Conditions

Negotiations between the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) and the Atlantic Theater Company have broken down, prompting a strike effective immediately. The dispute began after the Atlantic crew voted nearly unanimously to unionize with IATSE in February 2024.

Despite months of negotiations, management has stalled progress and made unilateral demands on working conditions. The union claims that management’s behavior constitutes an unlawful failure to negotiate in good faith, leading to the filing of unfair labor practice charges with the Federal Government.

The strike is part of a growing movement by off-Broadway workers unionizing for better wages, benefits, safety, and working conditions. IATSE International President Matthew D. Loeb stated that “Atlantic Theater’s refusal to bargain fairly has left the crew no choice but to strike.” The union seeks a fair contract that recognizes its contributions and provides basic protections.

The Atlantic Theater Company has received significant funding from public sources, including over $4.3 million in grants under the 2021 Save Our Stages law. However, management has not reciprocated by extending similar respect and support to the workers who keep their venues running. The union remains committed to reaching a fair deal for its members and is prepared to resume negotiations once Atlantic Theater is willing to bargain in good faith.

The strike highlights the need for fair contracts and equal treatment of workers across the arts community. IATSE has successfully organized workers across off-Broadway theaters, demonstrating that fair contracts are essential to ensuring a thriving arts community.
