Blue Ghost Lander Prepares for Total Lunar Eclipse Mission

A NASA-supported spaceship called Firefly’s Blue Ghost lander will soon embark on a mission to investigate a mysterious glow seen on the moon by Apollo astronauts. The “Blue Ghost” lander will launch from Florida in January 2025 and is scheduled to land near Mons Latreille within Mare Crisium in March 2025.

During its landing, the Blue Ghost will capture images of a total lunar eclipse, which should appear as a solar eclipse on Earth due to the moon’s perspective. The lander will also investigate the “lunar glow” phenomenon seen by Apollo astronauts, particularly Eugene Cernan during his final steps on Apollo 17.

Firefly Aerospace’s mission will focus on capturing high-definition video of a lunar sunset and the horizon glow. The lander is designed to have enough battery life to record these phenomena before beginning a dark period on the moon.

The Blue Ghost Mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, which includes projects such as lunar GPS, studying moon dust samples, and testing radiation-proof computers.
