Germany Stands Firm on Assad Ally Sanctions Amid Civil War Transition

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has reaffirmed the country’s stance on maintaining sanctions against allies of ousted President Bashar al-Assad, who committed “serious crimes” during the Syrian civil war. Baerbock proposed a “smart approach” to sanctions to help alleviate relief for the Syrian population.

During a regional conference in Riyadh, Baerbock pledged continued support for Syrians in need, including an additional €50 million for food, emergency shelters, and medical care. This commitment underscores Germany’s stance on holding those responsible accountable while providing humanitarian aid to affected populations.
