A new cicada invasion is expected to hit the eastern United States in 2025, with Brood XIV set to emerge after a 17-year slumber. The noisy insects will be a welcome change from last year’s “cicada-geddon,” but still won’t be subtle. The brood will cover parts of Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, northeast Georgia, central Pennsylvania, Long Island, New York, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
According to the University of Connecticut, Brood XIV is the second-largest periodical brood, stretching across a significant area. Periodical cicadas typically wait until the ground warms up to 64 degrees Fahrenheit before emerging, which usually happens in May or June for most states.
Despite their loud mating songs and intimidating appearance, cicadas are harmless. They don’t cause any damage and simply climb trees to mate. The “cicada pee” they produce is mostly water, so there’s no need to worry about it being disgusting.
In 2026, an even bigger emergence is expected when the two largest broods, XIX and XIV, come out together, marking a “cicada-palooza.”
