Walmart has recalled thousands of cartons of Great Value chicken broth due to concerns over compromised packaging that could lead to spoilage. The recall affects over 12,000 cartons in nine states, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) initiated the recall on December 11, but it was published on its website on January 8. Walmart said that a total of 242 stores across the affected states were impacted. The recalled product has a best used by date of March 25, 2026, and can be identified by the UPC code “007874206684.”
According to the FDA, food recalls caused by compromised packaging can have significant impacts on public health, consumer trust, and the food industry. Foodborne illnesses can result from bacterial growth or foreign material infiltration, posing risks to consumers.
Walmart has urged consumers to discard the recalled product and request a full refund. The company is continuing to work with its supplier to investigate the issue. Consumers are advised to check recall notifications regularly and report any suspicious contamination to manufacturers or regulatory agencies.
This recall is not an isolated incident, as two other Walmart products have been voluntarily recalled in recent weeks due to potential allergens or contaminants. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) provides guidelines for storing and handling chicken broth, which includes refrigerating opened broth for three to four days and freezing it for two to three months.
Experts emphasize the importance of shopping at stores with a good recall notification policy, especially for consumers with severe allergies or compromised immune systems. While there have been no reports of customers getting sick from this particular recall, consumers should remain vigilant and check for any recalls before purchasing products.
