Romania Protests Presidential Election Cancellation Amid Corruption Allegations

Thousands of protesters in Bucharest have taken to the streets to express their outrage over the cancellation of Romania’s presidential election. The opposition Alliance for Uniting Romanians led by George Simion has called for the resignation of President Klaus Iohannis.

The decision by Romania’s top court on December 6th has exacerbated existing concerns about corruption and infighting among mainstream parties, polarizing voters. The ruling party’s move has eroded public trust in state institutions, with hard-right parties now holding over a third of parliamentary seats.

A key factor behind the cancellation was an accusation that frontrunner Calin Georgescu benefited from a socially engineered campaign likely orchestrated by Russia, which Moscow denies. As a result, the court ordered a re-run of the election. However, the pro-European coalition government has yet to agree on a new calendar, with party leaders now planning for the two rounds on May 4th and May 18th.

President Iohannis will remain in office until his successor is elected, as his term expired on December 21st.
