Sam Moore, one-half of the iconic R&B duo Sam & Dave, has passed away at the age of 89. According to Deadline, his cause of death was complications from recovering from surgery.

Moore is best known for hits like “Soul Man,” “Hold On I’m Coming,” and “I Thank You.” He was a pioneer of soul music and a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee in 1992, recognized for his work with his partner Dave Prater.

Throughout his career, Moore performed for six U.S. presidents, including Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. Music legend Bruce Springsteen paid tribute to Moore on Instagram, calling him “one of America’s greatest soul voices” and expressing his sadness at the news of his passing.
