AMD Downplays RX 9070 “RDNA 4” GPU Performance Rumors

AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming, Frank Azor, has confirmed that early performance rumors about the Radeon RX 9070 XT are inaccurate. Contrary to earlier leaks suggesting it would be faster than the Radeon RX 7900 GRE or on par with the RTX 4080, Azor revealed that the actual performance is lower.

Azor attributed the delay in releasing RDNA 4 GPUs to gain insight into NVIDIA’s offerings. He stated that the AMD approach now allows them to better compete with NVIDIA’s high-end GPUs.

The RX 9070 XT is expected to be priced around $500, targeting the RTX 5070’s price point. To remain competitive, AMD must deliver comparable raster performance. With the release of RDNA 4 GPUs, AMD aims to close the gap in ray tracing performance as well.

Azor refused to disclose detailed specifications or pricing for the RX 9070 cards but emphasized that they will focus on competing with NVIDIA’s offerings at a lower price point. The Radeon RX 9000 GPU lineup has made significant strides in raster and ray tracing performance, positioning the RX 9070 XT to effectively compete against NVIDIA’s high-end GPUs.
