A new wave of cicadas is set to invade the US, with millions of red-eyed insects expected to emerge from underground nests in parts of Ohio, Kentucky, and other eastern states. The emergence marks the 17-year cycle of the cicada population, which is expected to be louder than last year’s massive brood that affected several states.
The University of Connecticut reports that Brood XIV will appear in areas including West Virginia, Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. Last year, trillions of red-eyed cicadas co-emerged over the spring and summer, causing widespread disruptions.
Cicadas are not poisonous or known to transmit disease, and they do not sting or bite. However, their loud buzzing sound can be disorienting, especially when handled. The insects emerge from underground after soil temperatures reach around 64 degrees Fahrenheit at a depth of 7-8 inches.
The US is bracing for another “cicada-geddon,” with millions of cicadas expected to materialize from the ground in a matter of weeks. While the emergence can be overwhelming, it poses no threat to human health and will pass once the cicadas die off.
