PATH Train Fares Hike for First Time in Over a Decade

Commuters riding the PATH train are facing higher fares after new fare hikes took effect on Sunday, marking the first price increase in over a decade. A one-way trip will now cost $3, up from $2.75, while customers 65 years old or older pay $1.50, an increase from $1.25.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey introduced the fare hikes as part of a multimillion-dollar plan aimed at improving speed, reliability, and passenger experience on trains. The increases are also partly due to inflation.

In addition to the fare hikes, the Port Authority is introducing a new 50% reduced fare for commuters with disabilities, which is expected to take effect in the summer. Riders can pay using contactless fare payment systems like TAPP, SmartLink Cards, or MetroCards.

The PATH train’s fare increases come as congestion pricing tolls went into effect for drivers entering Manhattan just last week. The Port Authority says the fare hikes are a necessary step to maintain the agency’s services while investing in improvements for its riders.
