The latest programming language rankings from RedMonk have been released, showing that JavaScript, Python, and Java continue to dominate the top three spots. PHP ranks fourth, followed by C# in fifth place, with TypeScript holding steady at sixth.
Interestingly, TypeScript has become the sole occupant of the sixth spot for the first time, having previously shared it with CSS. It remains to be seen whether it will continue to gain momentum or plateau.
C++ tied with CSS at seventh, while Ruby ranked ninth and C was 10th. Swift came in 11th, with Go tying with R at 12th. Shell, Kotlin, and Scala shared a three-way tie for the 14th spot.
Kotlin and Scala, both running on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), showed notable gains, with Scala rising two spots and Kotlin increasing by three. This is evidence of the continued staying power of the JVM.
Objective-C dropped to its lowest ranking at 17th, while Rust and Dart tied at 19th, showing no movement for five quarters. Beyond the top 20 languages, RedMonk recognized languages such as Ballerina (61), Bicep (78), Zig (87), Grain, and Moonbit.
The TIOBE index told a different story, with Python, C++, Java, C, and C# making up the top five languages in that order. JavaScript ranked sixth, followed by Visual Basic, Go, SQL, and Fortran. C dropped to its lowest position ever since the TIOBE index began in 2001 due to factors such as a lack of object-oriented features, the shift towards C++ in embedded systems, and the U.S. government’s push for memory-safe languages like Rust.
