A nationwide security breach involving PowerSchool has exposed sensitive student information, including social security numbers and medical data. The company, which provides cloud-based student information systems globally, confirmed unauthorized access to its customer support portals in December.
Affected districts, including Milford, West Clermont, Indian Hill, and St. Henry District High School, have been informed that their data was impacted. While some districts do not store sensitive information on PowerSchool, others reported potential breaches. Cybersecurity expert Dave Hatter warned that scammers may send out phishing emails to try to gain more information.
PowerSchool is conducting a thorough notification process for affected individuals and plans to offer credit monitoring and identity protection services. Notifications are expected to begin in the coming weeks. Those impacted will receive free credit monitoring for at least a year, while school leaders advised changing usernames and passwords to minimize potential damage.
