Tyler Perry has spoken out against insurance company cancellations amid the ongoing Los Angeles wildfires. The filmmaker stated that he finds it “appalling” and indicative of “pure greed.” Several insurers, including State Farm General and Chubb, had chosen not to renew policies or stop writing new ones for high-value homes with high wildfire risk.
The California Insurance Commissioner recently announced a ban on insurance companies canceling or not renewing policies for homeowners affected by the Palisades and Eaton fires for one year, backdated to October 9. This ban applies to a 90-day period between October 9 and January 7, when the fires began.
Perry expressed his frustration after witnessing a homeowner try to protect their home using a garden hose due to canceled insurance policies. He believes that insurance companies should prioritize their policyholders and retain them as valued customers.
The California Insurance Commissioner has emphasized the importance of insurance companies doing the right thing during this time. Perry plans to take steps to help those affected, keeping them in his prayers.
