Starbucks Closes Doors to Non-Customers Amid Safety Concerns

Starbucks is reversing its open-door policy, allowing customers to use the restroom or hang out in stores only after making a purchase. The decision comes as part of a new code of conduct aimed at prioritizing paying customers and maintaining a safe environment. The move reverses a 2018 policy that invited everyone into stores after two Black men were arrested for not buying anything during a meeting.

The new rules, which will be posted in all North American stores, ban discrimination, harassment, and other behaviors deemed unacceptable. Violators face consequences, including being asked to leave or law enforcement intervention if necessary. Employees are set to receive training on enforcing the policy.

This shift is part of Chairman and CEO Brian Niccol’s efforts to revitalize Starbucks’ sales, which have been declining. Niccol aims to recapture the chain’s community coffeehouse feel by reinvigorating its stores and improving customer experiences.
