Congestion Pricing in NYC Shows Promise After One Week

Preliminary data from New York City’s congestion pricing program suggests it is working, with improved traffic volume and travel times. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said Monday that the country’s first such plan has reduced traffic by 7.5% in Manhattan’s central business district, with a daily average of 475,000 to 560,000 vehicles compared to a conservative baseline of 583,000. Travel times have also improved, particularly for river crossings and crosstown trips, with delays reduced by 20-40%. The MTA has yet to calculate revenue from the program, but officials say New Yorkers are seeing the effects of congestion pricing in their daily lives.
