The Washington Commanders have made a habit of overcoming adversity and pulling off last-second wins this season. In Sunday’s wild-card round game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Jayden Daniels led his team to a 23-20 victory with a dramatic field goal.
The Commanders (13-5) face the NFC’s top seed, the Detroit Lions, in Saturday’s playoff game. After winning six consecutive games, including five on the final play of the game or last play from scrimmage, Washington is on a roll.
Coach Dan Quinn attributed the team’s success to their connection and belief in each other. “This is a really connected team,” he said. “They believe in one another and you have to have that connection to also have that belief.”
Quarterback Jayden Daniels, who completed 24 of 35 passes for 268 yards and 2 touchdowns in his first playoff start, was calm under pressure. “You just kind of find that zone,” he said.
The Commanders’ new ownership group and minority shareholders celebrated the win, including Magic Johnson, who is one of the team’s major investors. The team has undergone significant changes since Harris bought the franchise in July 2023, but fans are thrilled with the results.
With the win, Washington advances to Saturday’s playoff game against the Lions. The Commanders’ next challenge will be their ability to maintain their momentum and overcome any future adversity.
