Amazon Shuts Down Try Before You Buy Service After Eight Years

Amazon is ending its Try Before You Buy service on January 31st after nearly eight years. The decision comes as the company shifts focus to AI-powered features like virtual try-on and personalized size recommendations, which have gained popularity among customers.

The Prime Try Before You Buy service allowed Amazon members to test select clothing, shoes, and accessories for a week before deciding whether to keep them. Launched in 2017 with 1 million items from major brands, the service initially catered to new customers trying to find their size. However, as online shopping has grown, returns have become more of a challenge for retailers.

Industry experts say Amazon’s decision is partly driven by operational complexities and the need to simplify its services. The company is now focusing on streamlining its operations to reduce costs associated with returns.

The move comes amid growing concerns about returns in the retail industry. According to the National Retail Federation, shoppers are expected to return $890 billion worth of merchandise in 2024, accounting for nearly 17% of retailers’ annual sales. As online shopping continues to rise, Amazon’s shift towards AI-powered features aims to reduce returns and simplify its services.

Other box services like Stitch Fix have also faced challenges, with net revenue falling 16% last year. The company is working on a turnaround strategy and expects to return to growth by the end of fiscal year 2026.
