California Governor Signs Order to Streamline Rebuilding Process

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order aimed at accelerating the rebuilding process for victims of the recent Southern California wildfires. The order waives certain environmental and coastal regulations, extending protections against price gouging until January 7, 2026.

Under the executive order, permitting requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the California Coastal Act will be suspended for properties substantially damaged or destroyed in the wildfires. State agencies are also tasked with identifying additional permits that can be safely streamlined to speed up rebuilding.

The order aims to make the recovery process more efficient and affordable by reducing bureaucratic hurdles. Governor Newsom has committed to working with lawmakers to identify statutory changes that can further expedite rebuilding while enhancing wildfire resilience and safety. A copy of the executive order is available on the governor’s website.
