New Orleans is set to receive nearly 60 new electric vehicle chargers as part of a $9.3 million federal grant. The chargers, which include Level 2 and DC Fast Charging stations, will be strategically placed across the city’s five districts, with a focus on underserved communities.
The grant aims to help the city reach its goal of increasing battery-operated vehicles registered in Orleans Parish by 40% by 2035. Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration has emphasized the importance of equitable access to clean transportation for all New Orleanians.
The new chargers will be built at publicly owned properties and will include locations at Xavier University, Dillard University, and other community sites selected from a 2021 survey. The move is part of the city’s Climate Action Plan, which aims to reduce carbon emissions by 50% and improve air quality.
U.S. Rep. Troy Carter has welcomed the grant, saying it represents a “bold step forward” in ensuring equitable access to clean transportation. The new chargers will not only support the city’s environmental goals but also bring economic opportunities to the community.
The development of an Electric Transportation Roadmap is underway, which will explore ways New Orleans can capitalize on the growing national electric vehicle market. This roadmap will incorporate public feedback gathered through recent meetings and is expected to be completed this spring.
