Hyper Light Breaker Review: A Promising Roguelike Action Game

Hyper Light Breaker, the upcoming action game from Heart Machine, has already made a great first impression with its engaging combat, immersive 3D open world, and procedurally generated content. The game’s ambitious design goals are evident in its randomized open worlds, which offer a unique experience on each playthrough.

During my hands-on session, I was impressed by the game’s basic combat mechanics, traversal options, and procedural generation system. The map is carefully designed to encourage navigation and exploration, with natural obstacles and ramps that make traversing the terrain a thoughtful and rewarding experience.

One of the standout features of Hyper Light Breaker is its approach to exploration and progression. Unlike games like Risk of Rain 2, which impose time limits on exploration, Breaker allows players to explore at their own pace, with danger meters increasing as they acquire loot and keys to boss rooms or defeat enemies. This design move also introduces a new layer of strategy, as players must manage their resources and plan their expeditions carefully.

The game’s roguelike meta progression is also well-implemented, with vendors, character build configurations, and alternate characters available for players to unlock. Each character has a unique stat loadout that will differentiate them from one another, offering a high degree of replayability.

While the early access launch is eagerly anticipated, I’m still cautious about whether Hyper Light Breaker can deliver on its promise of “infinite replayability.” Time will tell if the game’s procedural generation seams become more apparent over time, but for now, everything seems encouraging.
