Meta to Cut 5% of Workforce, Focus on Low Performers

Meta is set to cut approximately 5% of its workforce, with a focus on the company’s lowest-performing employees. The decision was announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in an internal memo posted on the company’s internal Workplace forum.

Zuckerberg stated that 2025 will be “an intense year” and emphasized the need for the company to prioritize performance management. He plans to raise the bar on performance expectations and move out low performers faster.

The layoffs will impact around 72,000 employees, although not all affected workers will necessarily be let go. Employees who are impacted will receive severance packages in line with those provided by the company during previous cuts.

Meta has already made several operational changes aimed at building closer ties with President-elect Donald Trump. The company plans to end its third-party fact-checking program and adopt a new model used on Elon Musk’s platform X, which relies on individual users providing more context to posts.
