Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a masterclass in remastering a classic game. Nearly nothing has changed, which is both a blessing and a curse. While it’s wonderful to play the original game with its iconic level design and attention to detail, the lack of updates shows in some areas.
The game still shines in its co-op mode, where players can take turns controlling Diddy Kong. However, the camera system makes it challenging for one player to keep up, especially in fast-paced levels. The multiplayer aspect feels more like a bonus feature than a fully integrated experience.
The graphics and sound design hold up remarkably well, but they’re still rooted in the Wii era. The remaster’s visuals are smooth and 60 frames per second, but Tropical Freeze’s 2018 Switch port looks noticeably better.
The game’s greatest strength lies in its level design, which remains a highlight even years after its original release. Each level is packed with secrets to find, from classic KONG letters to puzzle pieces tucked away in every corner. Exploration can slow down the pace at times, but it’s a small price to pay for the sheer amount of content.
Overall, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is an excellent way to experience this timeless classic. While it may not have received the graphical overhaul it deserved, it remains a must-play for fans of platformers and retro games.
