The Biden administration has awarded $635 million in grants for electric vehicle (EV) chargers, leaving only $700,000 from the $2.5 billion set aside for EV infrastructure under the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law unallocated.
The grants will fund 49 projects that will deploy over 11,500 EV charging ports and alternative fuel infrastructure across 27 states, four federally recognized tribes, and the District of Columbia. The funds will also support 42 projects to expand EV charging within communities nationwide and seven projects to build out the national fast-charging network.
US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said these investments will help states and communities build a comprehensive network of EV chargers in the coming years.
There are currently over 70,000 public EV charging stations across the US, with more than 197,000 charging ports. The Biden administration aims to have 500,000 publicly available EV chargers by 2030.
The grants were announced just days before Donald Trump’s inauguration and come amid concerns that the new administration may claw back clean energy funding.
