Boeing faced significant challenges in 2024, including industrial action, safety problems, and supply chain issues. The aerospace giant delivered just 348 aircraft to its customers last year, the lowest output since the pandemic. A backlog of 5,595 unfilled orders remains.
Quality control concerns and a strike by workers in Washington state paralysed two key factories, leading to a sharp decline in production. Boeing had been planning to ramp up production of the 737 Max, but was capped by regulatory oversight due to safety concerns following previous accidents.
The company is working to improve its culture and restore trust with customers. However, its struggles have affected not only its own plans but also airlines, who are struggling to obtain aircraft due to Boeing’s low output. The situation has led to a large backlog of unfulfilled orders and delays in deliveries.
Aircraft manufacturer Airbus fared better, providing 766 planes last year. Despite supply chain issues, the European rival still fell narrowly short of production targets. Airlines such as Ryanair are feeling the impact, with CEO Michael O’Leary warning that delayed deliveries will limit their growth plans.
