Respiratory Illnesses Spreading Across Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania

A high level of respiratory illnesses, including flu, COVID-19, and RSV, is being reported in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, according to the CDC. Doctors say they’re seeing a surge in cases, with multiple viruses affecting patients simultaneously.

“We have a confluence of all the different viruses all together,” said Dr. Claiborne Childs, vice president of medical affairs at Riddle Hospital. “We’re seeing an uptick in cases around the hospital.”

The CDC has classified the respiratory illness situation as “high” in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, while Delaware is classified as “very high.” Experts say there’s still time to protect oneself with vaccines.

“This year’s flu shot is 40% beneficial,” said Dr. Theresa Metanchuk, Regional Clinical Director for ChristianaCare. “They’re meant to keep you out of the hospital and limit how severe the illness makes you.”

However, as people recover from illnesses, their immune systems are more vulnerable to other infections. Staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and eating a healthy diet can help prevent these illnesses.

Health experts warn that there’s still time to take preventive measures before the end of January, February, and early March.
