USPSTF Recommends Osteoporosis Screening for Older Women

The U.S Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued a final recommendation statement recommending osteoporosis screening for women aged 65 years and older, as well as postmenopausal women younger than 65 years at increased risk. The task force based its recommendation on evidence from three randomized clinical trials and three systematic reviews, which found that screening was associated with a moderate reduction in hip and major osteoporotic fractures.

According to the USPSTF, screening has a moderate net benefit for women aged 65 years or older, but the evidence is insufficient for men. The task force vice chair, John Wong, stated that more research is needed on whether screening and current treatments prevent fractures in men. Women concerned about their bone health are encouraged to discuss it with their clinicians.

The USPSTF concluded that while screening can identify men who have osteoporosis, the balance of benefits and harms cannot be determined due to insufficient evidence.
