Flu and Norovirus Spikes in US as Peak Season Approaches

The US is experiencing a surge in flu and norovirus cases, with doctor’s offices nationwide reporting high numbers of illnesses. Dr. Katrina Hood, a pediatrician at Pediatric Adolescent Associates in Lexington, Kentucky, warns that the peak season is imminent.

She notes that influenza (the flu) can be highly contagious and infect the whole family, causing symptoms such as feverish coughs, nausea, and stomach issues. In contrast, norovirus is a type of stomach bug that can last anywhere from 24 hours to five days.

To distinguish between the two, Dr. Hood recommends getting vaccinated against the flu, washing hands with soap and water while singing the ABC’s, and using bleach when cleaning surfaces. She also emphasizes teaching children about germs and how they spread, as this can help prevent the spread of both illnesses.

According to Dr. Hood, the peak season for flu and norovirus cases is expected to occur in late January or February, coinciding with the winter months when people are more likely to be indoors and interacting with others. As a result, she advises taking preventative measures to limit the spread of these illnesses.
