Amazon Cuts ‘Prime Try Before You Buy’ Service Ahead of Jan. 31 Deadline

Amazon is discontinuing its “Try Before You Buy” service, which allowed Prime members to try on clothes, shoes, and accessories before paying for the items they wanted to keep. The service will shut down on January 31, according to a notice posted on Amazon’s website.

The move comes as part of Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s efforts to cut costs across the company. In 2022, Amazon initiated its largest layoffs in history, cutting over 27,000 jobs, and has also shuttered several experimental projects. The “Try Before You Buy” service was one of several services that have been discontinued.

The service, which was previously called Prime Wardrobe, launched in 2017 as a perk for Amazon’s $139-per-year Prime subscription program. Users could test out luxury, staple, and Amazon-owned brands, and return unwanted items for free within seven days. The service operated similarly to other wardrobe subscription services like Stitch Fix and Rent the Runway.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been working to reduce costs since 2022, and the “Try Before You Buy” service was likely a casualty of those efforts. As Amazon continues to streamline its operations, it remains to be seen what other services will be discontinued in the future.
