Norovirus Outbreaks on the Rise in South Carolina

Norovirus outbreaks are increasing in South Carolina, with data from the CDC showing a significant rise in cases compared to previous years.

According to Dr. Brenna Brucker, chief of emergency medicine at Lexington Medical Center, norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can cause severe symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. The best prevention against norovirus is hand washing, regularly disinfecting surfaces, and washing fruits and vegetables.

The risk of contracting norovirus is particularly high during the winter months when people are in close proximity to each other. The virus also lives on surfaces for a long time, making it difficult to eradicate with standard hand sanitizers.

In addition to norovirus, flu season has been particularly severe this year, along with an increased incidence of RSV and pneumonia. Experts warn that protecting oneself and others through vaccination, proper hygiene, and social distancing is crucial in preventing the spread of these illnesses.

To combat norovirus after contracting it, Dr. Brucker advises washing and drying towels and sheets on high heat for at least five days to reduce the risk of re-infection.
