NATO Launches ‘Baltic Sentry’ to Enhance Critical Infrastructure Security

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the launch of “Baltic Sentry,” a new military activity aimed at strengthening the protection of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea region. The initiative will enhance NATO’s military presence and improve Allies’ ability to respond to potential threats.

The announcement was made during a Summit of Baltic Sea Allies, co-hosted by Rutte along with President Alexander Stubb of Finland and Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia. The meeting highlighted the growing threat to critical undersea infrastructure, including energy and communication cables, which have been damaged by recent sabotage incidents.

“Baltic Sentry” will involve the deployment of assets such as frigates, maritime patrol aircraft, and naval drones. NATO plans to work with its Allies to integrate national surveillance assets, improving the ability to protect critical undersea infrastructure and respond to potential threats. The initiative also aims to strengthen enforcement, with a focus on firm action within the law.

The launch of “Baltic Sentry” is part of NATO’s efforts to enhance the security of critical infrastructure in the region. The alliance will work closely with industry partners through the Critical Undersea Infrastructure Network to explore further ways to protect infrastructure and improve resilience of underwater assets.
