Jack Hoffman, the seven-year-old football sensation who captured the nation’s heart in 2013, has passed away at the age of 19 due to brain cancer. The Team Jack Foundation announced his death on Wednesday, stating that he had “passed after a long and hard-fought battle” with the disease.
Hoffman was diagnosed with brain cancer at just five years old. His family established the Team Jack Foundation to raise money for pediatric brain cancer research and provide awareness for the disease. The foundation aimed to honor Hoffman’s courage and inspire others to fight against the disease.
Despite his illness, Hoffman made a significant impact on his community. He earned an ESPY award for “Best Moment” in 2013 after scoring a 69-yard touchdown at a University of Nebraska spring game. He also spent time with former President Barack Obama in the Oval Office and met his father’s favorite sports team, the Cornhuskers.
The University of Nebraska athletic department expressed its condolences, saying that Hoffman embodied the spirit of a Husker “every day through his courage, fight, and inspiration.” The school shared its “profound sadness” over Hoffman’s loss and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
