Revenue sharing is set to begin at the start of the next school year, with schools distributing $20.5 million among their athletes. The money will be on top of name, image, and likeness deals.
South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has expressed her hopes that her team gets a fair share of the revenue. While she acknowledged that football is currently getting 75% of the funds, she believes that other sports, including women’s basketball, should receive more.
Staley pointed out that South Carolina has consistently produced successful teams, with over 400 wins and three NCAA national titles. The team has also led the nation in average attendance for the last decade, selling out all 13,046 of its season tickets this year.
Despite her team’s success, Staley believes that women’s basketball is often underfunded compared to other sports. She cited data showing that South Carolina’s women’s basketball program spent $5.1 million more on salaries than it made in revenue over the past few years.
Staley is now advocating for a more generous share of the revenue-sharing funds, urging schools to take women’s basketball seriously and avoid penalizing programs like hers with less money.
