SNL Creator Lorne Michaels Donates Archives to UT Austin’s Harry Ransom Center

The Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin has received a significant donation from “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels. The collection, valued for its insight into the show’s nearly 50-year history and Michaels’ own career in television, includes documents such as rehearsal notes, annotated scripts, correspondence, and audiovisual materials.

The donation is expected to open on September 20 and run through March 15, 2026, at the center. The exhibition aims to highlight key moments from SNL’s history, showcasing its role in reflecting and shaping societal discourse on politics, culture, and identity.

Among the notable figures who have launched their careers with SNL are Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Bill Murray. The Harry Ransom Center’s dedication to preserving and promoting the arts and humanities ensures that Michaels’ legacy will continue to inform and inspire future generations.

The center’s mission to facilitate a deeper understanding of Lorne Michaels’ contributions through meticulous cataloging, conservation, teaching, and public programming will be fulfilled with this donation.
