The nominations for the 2025 BAFTA Film Awards have been announced, with some notable snubs and surprises among the nominees. One of the biggest snubs is Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation “Wicked,” which was expected to receive a nomination in the best film category but was surprisingly left out.
Denzel Washington, widely regarded as one of the finest actors of his generation, has again been snubbed by BAFTA voters despite his numerous accolades elsewhere. His performance in “Gladiator II” earned praise from critics, but it seems he won’t receive a nomination this year.
On the other hand, some deserving nominees have received unexpected recognition. Hugh Grant’s creepy turn in “Heretic” has earned him a lead actor nomination, marking a departure from his typical rom-com roles. Irish-language music film “Kneecap” has also scored six nominations, including original screenplay and outstanding British film, in what is considered a phenomenal achievement for the low-budget indie.
Other notable snubs include “Challengers,” which was released just last year but failed to receive any recognition from BAFTA voters, and Nicole Kidman’s performance in “Babygirl,” which earned her no nomination despite being widely praised by critics. In contrast, Saoirse Ronan has received a leading actress nod for her role in “The Outrun.”
Lastly, some surprises on the list include “Super/Man” nominated for documentary after its Oscar snub and “Sing Sing” success with Colman Domingo earning a lead actor nomination.
