The Juneau School District is investigating a potential data breach of its students’ personal information, which was revealed after the software company PowerSchool initially denied any involvement. The breach occurred nationwide in late May and affected multiple districts in Alaska, including Petersburg, Bering Strait, and Nome Public Schools. PowerSchool discovered that an unauthorized user gained access to customer support portals, compromising sensitive data like social security numbers and medical conditions. While some information was believed to be safe, the district confirms that students’ contact details such as names and addresses were indeed accessed. The Juneau School District is working to determine how much personal information was compromised and will update families with more information as it becomes available.
