The Baltimore Ravens have made an unexpected move, claiming wide receiver Diontae Johnson off waivers from the Houston Texans just hours after he was waived by the Ravens earlier in the season. Johnson’s claim could lead to an additional compensatory draft pick for Baltimore.
Johnson, who played only 15 out of 70 snaps for the Texans during their wild-card playoff game against the Chargers, had asked for his release, according to sources. The receiver struggled with limited playing time and targets, catching just one pass for 12 yards in two games after being claimed off waivers from the Ravens.
The Ravens waived Johnson earlier this season after he refused to enter a game against the Philadelphia Eagles on December 1. He was acquired by Baltimore in October as part of a trade with the Carolina Panthers.
Johnson had previously played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he had a successful five-year stint before joining the Panthers. The Steelers drafted him in the third round of the 2019 draft and earned Pro Bowl selections during his time there.
By claiming Johnson, the Ravens will have a chance at earning a compensatory selection for the 2026 draft depending on the contract he signs in free agency.
