Washington Post Staff Seek Meeting with Bezos Amid Leadership Concerns

Over 400 staff members at the Washington Post have sent a letter to Jeff Bezos, requesting a meeting to discuss recent leadership decisions that have raised concerns among employees. The letter, signed by top journalists and correspondents, highlights issues such as transparency, trust, and communication.

The letter notes that recent changes, including the decision not to endorse US presidential candidates, have led to significant financial losses and a decline in subscribers. The company lost 10% of its subscription base and $100m in revenue in 2024 alone, with digital visitors dropping from 114 million to 54 million between November 2020 and November 2024.

Staff concerns are also centered around the leadership team, particularly CEO Will Lewis, who has been at the center of unease since his appointment in November 2023. The newsroom’s top editor, Sally Buzbee, stepped down after a reorganization, while several opinion staff writers resigned over the decision not to endorse presidential candidates.

The letter emphasizes that these concerns are unrelated to Bezos’ recent decision and requests a meeting with him to discuss ways to restore trust and competitiveness.
