Winter Virus Alert: Tips to Stay Healthy

As winter approaches, North Carolina Health Department numbers reveal an uptick in viruses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that norovirus, or the stomach bug, is highly contagious and can spread quickly through surface contact and food.

Elizabeth Tilson, Health Director and Chief Medical Officer for the NCDHHS, advises thorough hand washing to prevent its spread. “If people have the illness, it’s in their stool. If they don’t wash their hands well after toileting, it can be on their hands and they can spread it to things they touch.”

Another crucial step is cooking food to at least 145 degrees, as hand sanitizer is insufficient. Unfortunately, there is no norovirus vaccine available.

Respiratory viruses like flu, RSV, and COVID are also on the rise. According to NCDHHS, hospitalizations from respiratory illness increased by 5% in December.

Tilson emphasizes that vaccination is the best way to prevent serious illness. While you can’t always prevent infection, vaccination can reduce the risk of severe symptoms, emergency department visits, or even death.

To stay healthy this winter, follow these tips:

* Wash your hands thoroughly after toileting
* Cook food to at least 145 degrees
* Get vaccinated against flu, COVID, and RSV every year

By taking these precautions, you can reduce your risk of getting sick.
