Canada Captures Rare Meteorite Impact on Home Security Camera Video

A meteorite crashed into a home in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and was caught on camera, providing rare footage of both visual and audio evidence. The incident occurred in July 2024 and was announced by the University of Alberta.

The homeowner, Joe Velaidum, reported seeing strange debris near his house after returning from a walk with his dogs. He checked the security camera footage and saw a small rock plummeting towards the ground, hitting the walkway where he had been standing just minutes earlier.

Velaidum and his partner collected fragments of the meteorite and sent them to the University of Alberta for analysis. The team confirmed it was an ordinary chondrite, the most common type of meteorite.

The meteorite came from the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, traveling at least 125 miles per hour before impact. Its unusual landing was due to a combination of factors, including cloudy skies and its low altitude.

For Velaidum, this event is an unforgettable experience, saying it’s “unbelievable” that he almost got hurt during the incident. The rare footage captured on the home security camera provides a unique glimpse into a meteorite impact, furthering our understanding of these celestial events.
