Elon Musk Slams OpenAI’s Potential for-Profit Shift

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has expressed his concerns over OpenAI’s plan to transition into a for-profit entity. The shift in business model could award OpenAI CEO Sam Altman a 7% stake in the company.

Multiple media outlets and social media users have reported on the change, which Musk described as “deeply wrong.” A spokesperson for OpenAI denied the allegations, stating that being a non-profit is core to their mission and will continue to exist.

Musk has questioned the legitimacy of this transition multiple times before. In August, he stated that either turning a non-profit into a for-profit is legal or it’s illegal, and implied that OpenAI might be operating unlawfully. He also filed a lawsuit against ChatGPT-parent, alleging they prioritize commercial gains over their original mission.

OpenAI has previously denied Musk’s claims about a “founding agreement,” calling the idea “a fiction” he conjured to claim ownership of an enterprise he initially supported and then abandoned. The company will continue to operate as a non-profit.
