A surge in viral illnesses, including influenza, RSV, and Covid-19, has hit the Mankato area, with nearly 200 cases reported since the start of the year.
According to Dr. Katie Anderson, a physician at the Mankato Clinic, the spike is consistent with what typically happens during the winter months. However, this year’s numbers show that influenza accounts for 69% of positive results, up from 52% last year.
The clinic emphasizes the importance of vaccination to prevent the spread of these illnesses. While some people may experience mild symptoms and recover on their own by drinking fluids and resting, vulnerable individuals or those with severe symptoms should seek medical attention.
Anderson warned that dehydration and low oxygen levels can be serious concerns if left untreated. “If someone’s not able to drink fluids or experiences shortness of breath, chest pain, or other concerning symptoms, we want them to come in for a check-up,” she said.
As the winter months continue, healthcare professionals urge everyone to take precautions and prioritize vaccination to reduce the risk of viral illnesses.
