Ovechkin Steals Show Again, Capitals Win in OT

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin scored the game-winner in overtime to lead his team past the Ottawa Senators 1-0. This marked the Capitals’ fifth overtime win in eight games. The 39-year-old Ovechkin, who returned from a broken leg, continued his historic run as he is now 21 goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky’s record.

Ovechkin scored on an odd-man break with defenseman Martin Sandin, making his 874th career goal and extending his lead in overtime winners to 27. The Capitals also improved their penalty kill by going 3-for-3 against the Senators’ top-scoring line.

Goalie Logan Thompson made 25 saves for his second consecutive shutout as the Capitals struggled to generate scoring opportunities at 5-on-5. Washington’s offense remains an issue, and coach Spencer Carbery tweaked the top-six lineup again before Ovechkin’s game-winner.

Ovechkin is now one goal away from passing Jaromir Jagr for most game-winning goals in NHL history, and has scored on 179 different NHL goalies, setting a new record. With 21 goals this season, he continues to make history as he inches closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894 goals.
