Meta Unveils Holographic AR Smart Glasses with Neural Interface

Meta has announced its ambitious project “Orion”, a pair of holographic AR smart glasses that integrate AI, eye tracking, hand tracking, and a neural interface. The $300 Quest 3S VR headset was also showcased during the company’s Meta Connect 2024 keynote.

Orion features tiny projectors in the arms of the glasses that project light across the lenses, powered by custom silicon and sensors with a small battery in the arm. The glasses are built using silicon carbide and magnesium frames. While they look futuristic, they won’t be available for consumers anytime soon.

According to Mark Zuckerberg, Orion is an internal development kit used to build up the consumer-ready version of holographic AR glasses. Meta aims to reduce costs, having spent around $16 billion in 2023 on its Reality Labs division. The company’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, was impressed by the technology and noted that head tracking, brightness, color contrast, and field of view are excellent.

While Orion is not yet available for public purchase, it represents a significant step forward in wearable technology. If comfort and privacy concerns can be addressed, this type of device could potentially replace personal phones or become a new standard in personal devices.
