Medvedev Faces $200,000 Fine After Late Match and No-Show

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev is in danger of being fined over $200,000 after a late match and no-show at the Australian Open. The player was defeated by 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien, who became the youngest man to reach the third round since Pete Sampras in 1990.

The match lasted four hours and 49 minutes, with Medvedev not appearing for his post-match media commitments until just before 3am on Friday. The World No.5 player had technically broken tournament rules by leaving without speaking to journalists after their initial message told him they were waiting.

Medvedev’s behavior has led to a fine of up to $50,000 for racquet abuse and $100,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Russian’s actions include smashing his racquet into the net and destroying a camera attached to the net during the match, as well as taunting a line judge.

The Australian Open boss will make the final call on how much Medvedev is fined, but it could be a significant financial burden for the player, who stands to lose up to $200,000. The fine is in addition to what Medvedev would normally receive for making it to the second round of the tournament.
