A child has died from the flu, marking the first pediatric influenza-associated death in Wisconsin this season. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, the child lived in the north-central part of the state.
The cause of death was attributed to underlying illnesses that may have led to complications from the flu. However, officials declined to comment on whether the child received a flu vaccine.
Wisconsin’s respiratory disease epidemiologist, Tom Haupt, noted that while the flu shot is not perfect, it will provide protection against the virus. Dr. Kevin Dahlman, medical director of Aurora Children’s Health, echoed this sentiment and emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated.
To prevent the spread of germs and increase protection, Wisconsinites are advised to wash their hands frequently, avoid touching their face, stay home if sick, and wear high-quality masks in public. The Wisconsin DHS has provided a list of locations where residents can find flu vaccines and is urging people to take these precautions to stop the spread of respiratory viruses.
As of now, 16 pediatric influenza-associated deaths have been reported nationwide.
