The 15-month war between Israel and Hamas has left a devastating impact on human life in Gaza. Since October 2023, over 1,100 people have been killed, and about 240 taken captive. The death toll stands at 46,707, with many analysts believing it’s even higher.
Children are particularly affected, with 18,000 killed and countless more injured. According to the World Health Organization, nearly a quarter of the injured (22,500) suffer life-altering injuries. Severe limb injuries are common, leading to amputations. In one year alone, over 4,500 Palestinians have undergone amputations.
The Israeli blockade has also had a devastating impact on Gaza’s food supply. With over 1 million people internally displaced, many struggle to access basic necessities like water and aid. Aid deliveries are at a “breaking point,” with Israel restricting shipments and attacking aid workers. The UN humanitarian agency estimates that nearly half of the population is living in shelters without adequate clothing or protection from the cold.
The situation is further exacerbated by the environmental impact of the war. An estimated 85,000 tonnes of explosives have been dropped on Gaza, leaving a legacy of rubble and unexploded bombs. It’s predicted to take over a decade to clear the debris. With winter approaching, at least eight babies have died from hypothermia in inadequate shelters.
The global community has condemned Israel’s actions, but the impact on human life continues to be felt in Gaza. The situation is dire, with many fearing for their lives and struggling to access basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.
