Nintendo has unveiled the first look at Mario Kart 9, alongside its new console, the Switch 2. A gameplay clip confirmed the participating characters, vehicles, and tracks for the upcoming game. The initial track, Mario Bros. Circuit, is a simple design, but this may compensate for an expected increase in drivers to 24 racers. Over 20 familiar faces are set to appear, including classic Mario Kart characters. New vehicles will be introduced, with both pre-set options and customization returning.
The trailer showcased various karts, each with unique designs, such as Rosalina’s snowmobile-style vehicle and Luigi’s convertible. Customization appears to have returned, allowing players to choose a vehicle body, wheels, and glider. However, the inclusion of certain vehicles suggests that some may not be customizable. The Mario Kart 9 release is still months away from April’s Nintendo Direct event.
The Switch 2’s hardware details were also revealed in the console reveal trailer, highlighting its backwards compatibility, new Joy-Con button, and potential for using the controller as a mouse. A worldwide rollout of hands-on events will likely influence the release date, potentially pushing it to June at the earliest.
